Orthodox Christian prophecies are clear that Constantinople will be liberated and that it will once again become a Greek city.
That said, many contemporary Greek and Russian Orthodox Christian interpreters agree that the Russians will be the chosen race to
liberate Constantinople and hand it to the Greeks to "solve a problem". Elder Paisios made it clear that, because of the
degenerate state of the Greek youth, they are unworthy of the honor of liberating Constantinople themselves. Here follows a passage
excerpted from "Ο Γέρων Παΐσιος" ("Elder Paisios") by Priestmonk Christodoulos Agioreitos in which Elder Paisios speaks about this:
Στην Λιτανεία της Φοβεράς Προστασίας το 1992, την ομπρέλλα της Παναγίας την κρατουσσε ο ανθυπασπιστής της Μοίρας Καταδρομων, Β.Τ., από τα Ιωάννινα. Όπως προχωρούσαμε, δεξιά του ήμουν εγώ και αριστερά του ο Γέροντας, ο οποιος κάποια στιγμή είπε στον αξιωματικό:
-Άντε, εύχομαι με το καλό να είσαι σημαιοφόρος και στην Πόλη (Κων/πολη), που θα μπουμε:
Και γυρνώντας προς εμένα μου είπε:
-Άκουσες τι είπα;
-Ναι, Γέροντα το άκουσα. Αμήν, του απάντησα.
Τοτε γέλασε εκεινος και πρόφερε το χαρακτηριστικό του επιφώνημα.
-Ά! (εντάξει, δηλαδή).
Μιά μέρα αργότερα κατέβηκα στο κελί του και τον ρώτησα σχετικά με την Πόλη και μου είπε:
-Την Κωνσταντινούπολη θα την πάρουμε πίσω, αλλά όχι εμείς. Εμείς, έτσι όπως κατάντησε η πλειονότητα της νεολαίας μας, δεν είμαστε ικανοί για τέτοια. Όμως ο Θεός θα οικονομήσει να πάρουν άλλοι την Πόλη και να την δώσουν σ’ εμας, σαν λύση στο πρόβλημά τους.
Rough English translation:
During the Procession of the Amazing Protection of 1992, the umbrella of the Panagia was being held by the sergeant-major of the Army Squadron, B.T., from Ioannina. As we proceeded, I was on his right, and the Elder, who was on his left, at some point said to the officer:
-"Come on, I hope you are the standard-bearer even in Constantinople, in which we shall enter."
And turning to me he said:
-"Did you hear what I said?"
-"Yes, Elder, I heard it. Amen," I answered him.
Then he laughed and uttered his characteristic exclamation.
-"Ah!" (ok, in other words)
One day later I went to his cell and I asked him about Constantinople and he told me:
-"We will get Constantinople back, but not us. We, because of the sorry state of the majority of our youth, are not capable to do such things. But God will arrange it so that others will capture Constantinople and give it to us, as a solution to their problem."
Since the misinterpretation of prophecies can not only fill people with despair but also cause significant problems, it's
important for the individual studying them to be of the sufficient spiritual state and not try to analyze them for himself
because, due to their cryptic nature, it is easy to erroneously analyze them in the context of one's own personal thoughts.
Interpretations should, therefore, be left to holy Orthodox Christian priests, monks, and others who would be in a position to
know better.
The following story (which immediately follows the passage excerpted above) is about how some people came to see Elder Paisios
and, because they had misinterpreted a prophecy by Saint Kosmas the Aitolian, they wrongly believed that the prophecy in question
described the successful invasion of Greece by the Turks when the correct interpretation described quite the opposite. Elder
Paisios explained how they'd misinterpreted the prophecies and the great harm they were causing by not only believing what they
thought to be true but, moreover, propagating these false interpretations to others. He told them that the greatest enemies of the
Greeks were Greeks like them because, with their (unfounded) words of despair in times of peace, they would destroy Greek morale
when the war would occur and, as a result, cause more damage than many Turkish divisions could. Here follows the story:
Μιά μέρα πηγα κάτω κι είδα το Γέροντα να είναι κάπως στενοχωρημένος και λίγο πειραγμένος. Με κέρασε και μόνος του αρχισε να μου λέει:
-Ηρθαν κάποιοι εδω κι αρχισαν να μου λένε πώς θα γίνει πόλεμος και οτι οι Τουρκοι θα μπουνε στην Ελλάδα και πως θα μας πανε μέχρι τα εξαμίλια της Κορίνθου (εξηγώντας ετσι στραβά, με το χαλασμένο τους λογισμό, την προφητεία του Αγίου Κοσμα του Αιτωλου).
Τότε τους περίλαβα και τους είπα οτι ο χειρότερος εχθρός των Ελλήνων είναι κάτι Ελληνες σαν και σας, που εν καιρω ειρήνης, διαδίδουν πως, αν τυχόν γίνει πόλεμος, οι Τουρκοι θα μας πανε μέχρι την Κόρινθο, γιατί, οταν θ’ αρχίσει ο πόλεμος, ολοι θα εχουν πεσμένο ηθικό και μόνοι τους θα οπισθοχωρήσουν μέχρι την Κόρινθο. Ακόμη κι αν ηταν αλήθεια, δεν θα έπρεπε να το λέτε. Και σας το ξαναλέω: Αυτό να μην το ξαναπείτε πουθενά, γιατί κάνετε μεγαλύτερο κακό απ’ ο,τι θα εκαναν πολλές τουρκικές μεραρχίες.
Αυτά τους ειπα, παπά που, κι ενω εγώ ποτέ δεν θέλω να μιλω για προφητειες, μ’ ανάγκασαν να τους εξηήσω οτι τα εξαμίλια, που λέει ο Αγιος Κοσμας είναι τα εξι μίλια της υφαλοκρηπίδας. Αυτο ειναι το θέμα για το οποιο, τα τελεθταια χρόνια, «τρωγόμαστε» με την Τουρκία κι αυτό θα είναι το θέμα για το οποιο θα «πιαστουμε». Ομως δεν θα μπουν στην Ελλάδα· μέχρι εκει θα προχορήσουν, στα εξι αυτά μίλια, και τότε θα τους βρει η μεγάλη συμφορά απο τον βορρα, που λένε τα γραφόμενα, και δεν θα μείνει τίποτα ορθιο. Το ενα τρίτο των Τούρκων θα σκοτωθει, το ενα τρίτο θα εκχριστιανιστει και το υπόλοιπο θα φύγει βαθειά μέσα στην Ασία. Εμεις από τους Τούρκους δεν πρόκειται να πάθουμε τίποτα. Μερικά ψιλοπράγματα θα καταφέρουν και θα τους βρει η οργή του Θεου.
Αυτά ακουσα, παπά μου, απ’ αυτούς και στενοχωρήθηκα. Δεν μπορουσα να πιστέψω οτι οι ιδιοι οι Ελληνες – με το να διαδίδουν τέτοια πράγματα εν καιρω ειρήνης – προσφέρουν στους Τούρκους τη μεγαλύτερη συμμαχική βοήθεια.
Επίσης αρχισαν να μου λένε οτι αυτό, που ειπε ο Αγιος Κοσμας: «τότε θά ‘ρθει, οταν θά ‘ρθουν τα δύο καλοκαίρια κι οι δυο πασχαλιές μαζί», τώρα πού επεσε η Ανάσταση με τον Ευαγγελισμό μαζί – και πέρασε και ο χειμώνας σαν καλοκαίρι – σημαίνει οτι οι Τουρκοι θα εισβάλουν στην Ελλάδα.
Ολοι γίναμε προφητες, παπά μου, κι εξηγουμε με το μυαλό μας τα πράγματα, οπως θέλουμε. Κι εδω αναγκάστηκα να τους πω οτι αυτό που ειπε ο Αγιος Κοσμας, «τότε θα ‘ρθει» δεν ενοουσε τους Τούρκους. Εννοουσε πως τότε θα ‘ρθει η ελευθερία των Βορειοηπειρωτων. Και πράγματι αυτό το ετος ανοιξαν, μετα από τόσα χρόνια, τα σύνορα και μπορουν κάπως ελεύθερα να επικοινωνουν με την πατρίδα τους.
Παπά μου, ειδα οτι πολύ μεγάλη ζημιά κάνουν αυτοί οι ανθρωποι, που εξηγουν τα πράγματα με το φτωχό μυαλό τους. Και σαν να μην φτάνει αυτό, διαδίδουν και στους αλλους τις χαλασμένες ιδέες τους.
Rough English translation:
One day I went and saw the Elder and he was somewhat disappointed and a little disturbed. He treated me and on his own he began to tell me:
-"Some people came here and began to tell me that a war will occur and the Turks will enter Greece and take us as far as the Εxamilia of Corinth (they were explaining incorrectly, with their distorted logic, the prophecy of Saint Kosmas the Aitolian)."
"Then I scolded them and told them that the worst enemy of Greece are Greeks such as yourselves, who in times of peace, spread rumors that, in case of a war, the Turks will take us as far as Corinth, because, when the war starts, everyone will have a fallen morale and on their own they will retreat to Corinth. Even if this was true, you should not say it. And I tell you again, don't repeat this anywhere, because you are causing greater harm than that which many Turkish divisions could cause."
"I told them these things, my father, and even though I never wish to talk about prophecies, they compelled me to explain that the Examilia which Saint Kosmas talks about are the six miles of the territorial waters. This is the subject over which, during the latter years, we are in a state of enmity with Turkey and this will be the subject over which we will get into war. But they will not enter Greece; they will advance up to it, to these six miles, and then the large calamity from the north will find them, the prophecies say, and nothing will remain standing. One third of the Turks will be killed, one third will become Christian, and the rest will retreat deep into Asia. Nothing will happen to us from the Turks. They will cause a few minor things, then the rage of God will find them."
"I heard these things from them, my father, and I became disappointed. I couldn't believe that the Greeks themselves - by spreading around such things in times of peace - give the Turks the greatest help."
"Also they began to tell me that that which Saint Kosmas said: 'then it will come, when the two summers and two Paschas occur together', now that the Resurrection and the Annunciation occurred together - and the winter passed just as the summer - this means that the Turks will invade Greece."
"We have all become prophets, my father, and we explain things with our mind, the way we want to. And here I was compelled to tell them that that which Saint Kosmas said, 'then it will come' he didn't mean the Turks. He meant that then would come the liberation of Northern Epirus. And in reality, this year, after so many years, the borders were opened, and they could communicate somewhat freely with their homeland."
"My father, I saw that these people are causing great damage, who explain these things with their poor minds. And as if this is not enough, they spread their distorted ideas to others as well."
